Rome and the barbarians - Palazzo Grassi - Venice Events
Despite the fact that winter is a period of transitino, the high season for art in Venice actually begins in the spring, there are plenty of open shows, quite a number of them in museums, which thus become doubly more attractive: Notable among them are the shows dedicated to Medardo Rosso, at the Guggenheim Collection (closing January 6); Stephen Bottomley (jewelry) and Mariagrazia Rosin (site-specifc display of blown glass), at Palazzo Fortuny (with all its fascinating halls finally open to the public); “Spheres of the Earth and the Sky”, exploring the history of depicting our Earth and sky, at the Correr Museum.
To see the first great exhibition of the year, we must wait until January 26, when “Rome and the Barbarians”, the first historical-artistic “maxi-exhibition” to be mounted by the new management of Palazzo Grassi, will open. On view on all three floors of the building (redesigned two years ago by architect Tadao Ando), the show is to examine artistic expressions in Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages in the western world, as related to the Classic Roman heritage.
