Is a Byzantine-style church, and for hundreds of years is has been an active workshop for some of the greatest Italian and international artists; the mosaics depict episodes from the life of St. Mark and the New and Old Testament; along the centuries, the church has been adorned with art objects from every part of the world. The basilica has played two great roles: as the Doge’s Palace chapel, it was first the palatine church, and then since 1807, the city’s cathedral.
