Venice: Exhibitions, Art and Sport

With Carnival behind, Venice is back to its natural rhythms and life cycles. The month of March is welcomed as a well-earned break, prior to the opening – during Easter and early spring- of the new tourism high season. This, then, is one of the most pleasant periods of the year for visitors, who can take full advantages of extraordinary opportunities  and of the city’s special monuments and beauty, as well as of an impressive calendar of events. Art, Music, Leisure, Sports – here’s a quick rundown of events you should interested in.

Art exhibition are once again the main attraction in Venice. Among the new openings this month we recommend Sargent and Venice, a show that Venice takes great pleasure in dedicating to the American Impressionist master who was “in love” with its allure. Starting in March 23the Correr Museum, the most important local civic museum, is to offer sixty-odd works (oil and water-color paintings) coming from leading American museums as well as from the Royal Academy of Art of London and the Tyssen-Bornemisza of Madrid. Palazzi, Churches, City Squares and canals are depicted in curious scenes of everyday life in old Venice of the late 19th century and early 20th century. Unique noteworthy elements include the study of light, free interpretation of incisiveness.

Among upcoming openings we would like to mention also the exhibition of Guido Cadorin ( 1892 – 1976) the leading 20th century  Venetian artist at Querini Stampalia Foundation March 24. At Peggy Guggenheim Collection in the intimate spaces dedicated to exhibitions you can now view one of the pioneers of American Abstract Expressionism, Richard Pousette – Dart, a leading exponent of the famous movement known as the New York School whose members included such legendary artists Pollock, Rothko and De Kooning . From his early neo-Cubist works Pousette-Dart soon moved on to Action Paintings, a technique combining hand gestures, colors and materials. His output is on view in a stirring show, open through May 20.

The International Boat Show, which starting last year calls itself also Sea Festival, now celebrates its sixth year and is distinguished by its historical – cultural features and by its numerous events dedicated to boat lovers (exhibitions, boat races, canoe, sail-boat and rowing courses). The show prides itself on the presence of over a hundred exhibitors and boat builders who show-case within the seaport terminal and nearby lagoon basin the best of the current production.

The main sport event in Venice is the “ City of Venice Cup “, which from a purely technical point of view is the most prestigious Venetian sport event. It is the only Italian trial event leading to the Men’s Foil Fencing World Cup competition, to take place at the Palazzetto dell’ Arsenale on March 23rd and 24th with the participation of  over 200 fencing champs from some thirty nations.
