The theatre was built in 1792, after a public competition for its design, and not without controversy and debate. It embodied the ideal of a republican theatre; the boxes were deliberately egalitarian in design, and a notion of severe austerity was communicated also by the decoration. The theatre was repeatedly ravaged by fire and always rebuilt from its ashes; the last reconstruction is the one of 2003.
